Boat repair business opens

Bob Dumong has watched his boat repair business flourish to a point where he decided recently to open a new repair shop in the Rock Ridge community. The Buckhorn Boat Doc, at 7027 N.C. 42, offers a comprehensive line of repair service Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “I’ve been working on boats for 24 years, and for the past five years, I’ve been self-employed and working at my house,” he said. “Every year, my growth has been double. This year has been crazy growth. I had no more room for boats. I had 46 boats in my yard.” Dumong is a 22-year master technician specializing in the repair of Evinrude, Johnson, Mercury, Yamaha and Suzuki engines. He is technician certified by all manufacturers. “I do everything,” he said. “We specialize in all forms of marine repair, everything but fiberglass. I don’t fix the dents. I fix the motors.” The business has diagnostic software, provides fuel injection services, and sells motor parts and accessories. The boat doc offers 24-hour outdoor storage for boats, RVs, campers and trailers. Electronic services, trailer repair and common boat accessories, including life jackets and tubes, are also available. Dumong’s business has grown primarily by word of mouth and customers travel from across North Carolina and other states. “I really believe it gets fixed once, and it gets fixed right,” he said. “I don’t let anything out the door until I know it’s 100 percent. To have people driving four to five hours to bring me a boat is an honor. ” The Buckhorn Boat Doc is having a grand opening on Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with contests, food and door prizes planned.
